The Scoop: La Malinche is a popular small plates fusion restaurant in downtown Silver Spring with a fascinating namesake. La Malinche was a native woman who helped Spanish Conquistador Hernan Cortez conquer the Aztec empire in the 1600’s. Her Wikipedia explains that “she is understood in various and often conflicting aspects, as the embodiment of treachery, the quintessential victim, or simply as symbolic mother of the new Mexican people.” Owner Jaime Sorto says the reason for choosing the controversial historical figure as a namesake was to represent the restaurant’s fusion of traditional Spanish tapas with Mexican cuisine. The culinary results are fantastic as one can enjoy guacamole and cured Spanish meats in the same delectable sitting. We recommend the lamb chops, scallops, calamari and taco plates but nothing we tried was a disappointment. The sangria is also not to be missed; we recommend the cava which is sparkling white wine with blueberries.
