The Scoop: Just blocks away from U St, 18th St, and Dupont Circle, El Tamarindo is an ideal spot for any meal from breakfast to a late-night snack. A true family owned restaurant with deep ties to the community, El Tamarindo provides a welcoming atmosphere and an extensive menu of traditional Mexican and Salvadorian dishes that make it a local gem. Bright paintings by local artists adorn the walls and strands of colorful flags hang from the ceiling giving the interior a cheerful vibe. The owners’ daughter, Ana, recommended the pupusa, a dish which she describes as “THE street food of El Salvador” and which I would describe as the perfect combination of crispy-on-the-outside and melty-on-the-inside. Other specialties include the House Combo which is great for those unable to decide between nachos, taquitos, and quesadillas (you get all three), and the house made sangria that has just the right balance of sweet, tart, and refreshing. With a prime location, a full bar, and menu filled with delicious and traditional Central American dishes, El Tamarindo is an ideal spot for any meal from breakfast to a (very) late night snack.
